Exterior waterproofing stops water on the outside of the foundation. The soil is dug out down to the footing, the wall is cleaned and repaired, a waterproof membrane is applied, and a drain is often added at the base before backfilling.

Request a call backWhen exterior work makes sense
- Finished basements where you don’t want to open up interior walls
- Serious, widespread leaking through the walls
- When the foundation is being exposed anyway for other work
Start with the cheap fixes
Before any digging, make sure gutters are clean, downspouts discharge several feet away from the house, and the ground slopes away from the foundation. These fixes are inexpensive and often reduce water problems a lot.
Cost
Exterior waterproofing typically costs more than interior work because of excavation. National cost guides put it around $10,000 to $18,000. See the cost guide.
